At many of the student restaurants a sign has appeared on the counter saying “The taxation of cafe and kiosk products for students have shifted under the Value added tax”. This means that the price of almost all of the cafe products rises by 14 per cent at student restaurants.
These products include
- tetra packed juices
- ice creams
- energy drinks
The change is based on changed taxation guidelines by the taxation officials. In future only food products that are meant to be consumed in the restaurant can be sold without value added tax.
What is METKA going to do?
METKA has already examined the situation by contacting the taxation officials and is now searching ways to influence it. It seems that this is mainly a political question that requires influencing at a national level. The days at a campus may be long and students often need snacks and pauses at restaurants to keep their attention up. Also students daily budgets may be tight and even the slight rise in prices may be significant. This kind of situations require active interest watching for the students.
METKA recommends you to share this post and information about the raising prices of snacks at student restaurants.
