World Student Capital – Students of the Capital Region are concerned for students of the Western-Uusimaa region and their possibility of travelling to the central region. Pohjolan Liikenne has informed that they will be terminating all their transport routes in the Western-Uusimaa region. Majority of the effected routes are from Nummela and Lohja, to Helsinki. By terminating these routes before organising any replacements, they are endangering the students’ daily commute.

WSC acknowledges the distress caused to the bus traffic contractors due to the sudden decline of passengers during the pandemic. And we urge Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, and the municipalities of the Western-Uusimaa region to act on securing the students possibility to commute. During this pandemic many industries were supported for their financial struggles. All the while when the public transportation industry has been facing a steady decline with their numbers of passengers, which the Cities and Municipalities know. Yet they still have not received any support. Thus, the time for act would be now.

A functioning public transportation system is vital for students. Research also proves that a poorly functioning public transportation system causes a reduction in its use, which in turn harms itself. Thus, an advancement in a more eco-friendly and affordable public transportation system is required.
