At Metropolia there are many ways to become a so-called activist. This can be tutoring, serving on the board of a student association, acting as a student representative or organising METKA club activities.
It is possible to gain credits for student activism. As a general rule, 5 credits can be awarded for each activity, with the exception of student representation, where the number of hours spent on the activity does not correspond to 5 credits.
As a general rule, 2 credits are awarded for serving on a Degree Advisory Board, and more credits are awarded for serving on the Board of Trustees, Board of Examiners or Board of Directors of Metropolia Ltd, based on the number of hours spent.
Ten courses are offered:
- XX00FV68 Peer tutoring

How to complete the course
- Apply for a task: for becoming a tutor through the tutor application process, for the student union board through their regular board meetings, as a student representative through the application process, etc.
- If you are selected, register for the course. You should register for a course even if you are not yet sure whether you are applying for credits.
- Attend a training or start-up meeting organised by METKA. This is available for almost all courses. At the training you will receive a Moodle course key.
- If you are unable to attend the training, complete the substitute assignments in Moodle. Ask METKA for the course key. Please note, however, that tutor training, which consists of two training evenings and one Saturday training session, cannot be completed entirely with substitutive assignments.
- Complete the term and complete the assignments in Moodle. It is advisable to do the assignments as early as possible in the year.
- Complete the assignments no later than the following calendar year. For data protection reasons, METKA does not keep data (such as the list of tutors) for several years.
- Once you have completed the tasks, they will be checked by METKA’s specialist. The contact person of your degree programme (usually a guidance counsellor or a programme coordinator) will enter the points in the register.
- Once the assignments have been assessed/approved by a specialist, send a message to your degree programme’s contact person that you have now passed the course.
- METKA’s experts review tasks alongside their other work. So please give them enough time to do this. As a general rule, tasks will be reviewed within 4 weeks.
- Please contact us separately if, for example, you are about to graduate and the matter is urgent. The contact persons for degrees also need time to register your credits.
- Please remember that if you have worked in several roles and wish to claim credits for all of them, you will need to register for all of the Moodle courses and complete the assignments for each course.

FAQ
Why do I need to join a Moodle course?
The assignments, their instructions and additional material are there. Reports will not be accepted by email from 1.1.2025 onwards. Moodle also allows you to send newsletters to students, so you can easily get information about the course.
Why is there no more report writing?
The report is divided into sub-tasks. The tasks reflect on the same issues as the report (personal objectives for the activity, the benefits of the activity from a professional point of view, etc.). Instead of a report in file format, the assignments are returned to the Moodle platform, so that the information is stored in one place and the need for emails between the student, METKA and the member of Metropolia staff who awards the credits is eliminated.
I have been a tutor for years, can I still get credits?
In principle, you should apply for credits in the following calendar year. So if you have been a tutor or, say, a member of the student union board in 2024, you will need to complete your assignments in Moodle in 2025. This is because, according to data protection principles, METKA cannot keep lists of tutors or student representatives who have been active in a given year for more than 13 months if there is no clear purpose for them. If METKA’s experts change, no one may know whether a person has actually been active.
I did not register for a course at the beginning of the term or join Moodle. Can I still get credits?
Yes you can! Implementation is ongoing and the Moodle workspace is always open. However, as a rule, you must apply for credits in the calendar year following your term of office. Please also note that Moodle assignments are easier to complete if you can see what you need to cover in the assignments at the beginning of the term. Afterwards, it can be hard to remember what you have done! So sign up for a course and join your Moodle workspace, even if you’re not sure if you want to apply for credits for the activity.
Help! I’m supposed to graduate and get my final credits in a week. What do I do?
METKA experts run these courses and check assignments alongside other work. They should therefore be given enough time to check the assignments. As a rule, assignments are checked within four weeks. Please contact METKA separately in case of urgency. Please note that METKA does not have the power to enter credits in the register and cannot influence the timeframe within which the contact person for each degree can enter credits. In case of urgency, please contact the contact person for your degree (usually the guidance counsellor or the education planner).
