It is important to take care of your health and wellbeing throughout your studies. This page contains information and useful links about Metropolia’s own student wellbeing services, as well as Nyyti ry and the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS).
Metropolia’s Student Wellbeing Services
Metropolia has a multi-professional student wellbeing services team: Student Wellbeing Advisors, Study Psychologists, a Study Coach, a Broad-based Special Education Teacher, and University Chaplains. The wellbeing service staff offer individual consultations, but also organize events, campaigns, and group activities. You can book an appointment through the Vihta system.

FSHS (YTHS)
The FSHS, or Finnish Student Health Service, is a foundation established in 1954 that provides general, mental, and oral health services for higher education students. The current form of the FSHS was created when the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) expanded the operations of the Student Health Service Office in Helsinki to a nationwide level. Services were also extended to UAS (University of Applied Sciences) students in 2021. FSHS operations are funded by the state (77%) and by the healthcare fees paid by the students themselves (23%).
Student Healthcare Fee
The healthcare fee is mandatory for all higher education students (excluding, for example, exchange students and Open UAS students). The fee must be paid regardless of whether you use the services.
No invoice is sent for the fee; it must be paid independently via the OmaKela e-service. The deadline for the spring semester is March 15th and for the autumn semester November 15th.
The healthcare fee covers all FSHS services for the student. The FSHS does not charge separate visit or service fees (except for a fee for appointments that are not attended and have not been cancelled).
If you have not paid the fee by the deadline, Kela will send a reminder. A fixed late fee of 5 euros will be added to payments made after the deadline. If you still haven’t paid after the reminder, Kela can deduct the fee and the late fee from your study grant without separate consent. If Kela cannot deduct the fee from your study grant, the healthcare fee will be referred to debt collection.
HealthStart Survey
As a first-year student, you can complete the HealthStart survey in the Self online service. The goal of the survey is to give both you and a professional an understanding of your health status and to help target services as early as possible at the beginning of your studies.
HealthStart maps your physical, psychological, and social health status, key health behavior patterns, as well as factors related to health, health behavior, and study ability.
