METKA appoints several dozen student representatives each year. The application period for next year’s student representative of the degree program advisory council is now open!

At the same time we are looking for student representatives to Legal Protection Committee and Board of Examiners.

Advisory Councils of Degree programmes

The advisory councils are bodies made up of staff and representatives of working life. The purpose of these councils is to develop the relevance and quality of education for working life. The student representative acts as a link between students and staff. They bring out the views and needs of students in Metropolia’s decision-making. Curriculum changes are also discussed in the advisory councils. The term is one calendar year and METKA provides training for the task for the selected student representatives.

The advisory councils meet 1-4 times a year, so the role is suitable for a busier student. It is also possible to earn credits for the activity if you actively participate in the activities of the advisory council and in the training and section meetings organised by METKA.

Legal Protection Committee

The Legal Protection Committee handles appeals concerning the acceptance of students and the loss of the right to study. It also prepares cases concerning the revocation of the right to study and the reinstatement of the right to study. The term of the Legal Protection Committee is two (2) calendar years.

The Legal Protection Committee is composed of the Chair and two other members, all of whom have two personal deputies. The Chair and the Vice Chair are appointed from committee members representing the staff. The other members of the Legal Protection Committee consist of employees of the university of applied sciences, with at least one of the members a lecturer of the university of applied sciences and at least one a student completing degree studies.

The Committee meets about once a month during academic year. The busiest times are typically at the beginning of semesters, when there are a number of student admissions cases to be dealt with and meetings can be lengthy. At other times, meetings may be cancelled if there are no new matters to be discussed. Meetings are usually held on Fridays at Myllypuro campus.

Board of Examiners

The Board of Examiners handles appeals concerning course performance and disciplinary cases. The term of the Board of Examiners is two (2) calendar years.

The Board of Examiners is composed of a Chair and two other members, all of whom have a personal deputy. The Chair and the members of the Board of Examiners and their personal deputy members are appointed by the Board of Directors of Metropolia. The Chair and his or her deputy must be a Principal Lecturer or a Senior Lecturer. The other members of the Board of Examiners consist of lecturers of the university of applied sciences and at least one student completing degree studies.

The Board of Examiners meets about once a month during the academic year. Meetings are held in Teams during office hours and usually last a couple of hours. Each meeting typically has a few cases to discuss.

Applying

The application period for the advisory councils is open from November 1st to November 30th 2024. The selections will be made by Board of METKA at the meeting on 9.12.2024 following the closing date. Applicants will have the opportunity to introduce themselves at the meeting.

The application period for Legal Protection Committee and Board of Examiners is open from November 1st to November17th 2024. The reason for the different application period is that the decision will be taken by the METKA’s Representative Council at its meeting on 3 December 2024 and the Representative Council must be given sufficient time to examine the applications before the meeting. Applicants will have the opportunity to introduce themselves at the meeting.

Applicants who can serve for the full term are prioritized. A person already graduated is not eligible to be a student representative. If a person graduates during their term of office, they must resign.
