“I think METKA should bring up more what it does and have done for students’ benefit and well-being. There’s a lot of information, but it doesn’t show very well to so called regular students. That’s why it may be difficult for example for tutors to tell new students why they should join METKA. Especially now that Tuudo student card provides all national student discounts.”

The new year and decade started a while ago, and as usual, new year brings both new METKA Board and Representative Council aboard. During these first weeks of 2020, among everything else METKA does, also the responses for METKA 2020 Survey have been handled, thematized and analysed at the brand new Myllypuro office.

In Spring 2020, METKA publishes a series of articles around the topics in METKA 2020 Survey. The goal for the series is to answer the open feedback and questions that were given in the survey responses. New article will be published weekly on Tuesdays on METKA website and Oma, starting now and finishing right before May Day festivities. Right now, you are reading the first part of the series.

About METKA2020 Survey

METKA2020 Survey was open between 30.10.-13.12.2019. The survey form was done using E-lomake form system, and it was open for all Metropolia students. The questionnaire form included both open questions and statements that were given a response in 1 to 5 scale. The questions handled METKA-driven operations that are shown, or should be shown, to Metropolia students and METKA Members. The goal was to get perspective how METKA is seen and thought about. This way METKA can develop its work and communication so that all METKA Members, Metropolia students and staff know well why METKA exists and what kind of work it does.

The survey was taken 171 times, from which 65,5 % were METKA Members. When put into perspective of possible survey takers, i.e. around 16 800 Metropolia students or around 2700 METKA Members, the number may seem quite modest. However, METKA is happy with the number of participants. Thank you all once again for giving us your time and valuable information! METKA will organize similar survey also in the future for follow-up.

What’s next?

Next week, we will open what METKA, or student union in general, actually is, what it is not, why it exists and what it is supposed to do. As referred in the quote in the beginning, one of the most common critiques for METKA is that the work we do does not reach students well enough.

This series is a way to answer that critique, and we welcome the discussion and comments to it. Welcome to the guided tour to student union operations!
