Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Student Union METKA expresses its deep disappointment with the government’s decisions in mid-term policy review session, that once again target significant cuts to higher education. Weakening the basic funding of universities of applied sciences will directly affect the quality of education, students’ ability to cope and the development of the Finnish level of competence.
The decisions to make cuts do not clearly take into account that higher education is one of the most important investments for the future. Universities of applied sciences train practical skills needed in areas such as social and health services, technology industry and culture sector. When funding does not ensure quality teaching, students are deprived of the support and guidance they need, and society is deprived of a skilled workforce.
While the government proposes to increase investment in research, development and innovation, it cuts basic funding for education. RDI investments are pointless if Finland does not have educated people with the skills and potential to produce new knowledge, innovations and business activities.
We refuse to accept the dismantling of education. METKA calls on the government to cancel the education cuts and to show in concrete terms that Finland really values knowledge and education. Investing in education is not a cost but a prerequisite for a sustainable future.
Although the government is allocating €100 million to increase the number of study places, universities cannot provide quality education without sufficient basic funding and while student numbers are increasing. Every student deserves not only high-quality teaching but also, for example, high-quality and adequate guidance and support services.
In addition to direct cuts, the government has hinted at the possibility of studying a full degree at an open university of applied sciences or university. A paid degree creates a bypass for high-income people to obtain higher education in a situation where they have not been selected to study on the basis of a certificate or an entrance exam.
METKA stresses that free and accessible education is a cornerstone of Finnish society. The decisions taken now threaten these principles. Students are already living on the edge of poverty due to inflation, housing costs and the cuts already made by the government to students. Cuts to student income have already undermined the attraction of education and the ability to graduate on time.
Education was supposed to be under special protection, but now it is once again facing big cuts. In two years, promises have been broken several times.
