Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Student Union METKA Wed 21.10. has decided to nominate the future social scientist and the current, Vice Chairperson, Nimo Samatar as member of the Board of our umbrella organization the Union of Students in Finnish University of Applied Sciences (SAMOK) for 2021.

METKA’s candidate for SAMOK’s Board of Directors

Social Sciences student Nimo Samatar (25) has worked as Vice Chairperson of the Board of Directors in 2020. Nimo is known for her captivating smile and caring way of leading and meeting people. It is also characteristic of Nimo to take over any space by her presence.

Samatar, who has been studying for her last year, has been actively involved in METKA’s activities since the freshman year, both as a tutor and as a member of the Representative Council. Last year, she garnered 100 votes in the House of Representatives Election, which made her the national top voted in the House of Representatives election among Student Unions.

She named the leadership of Student Union activities in the midst of a pandemic and the sharpening of the personal political eye and skills as the greatest success of his year in her governance. She describes that she has learned at METKA to say it proudly who she is, what she wants and why so. She sees this as central to advocacy and as a guardian of students benefits. Nimo describes that she learned that sometimes you have to talk an engineer to an engineer and an official to an official.

‘’I have tirelessly pursued the interests of Metropolia’s students and, above all, asked, heard and discussed when they needed support in both their studies and their student rights. The right of the University of Applied Sciences Act to a safe learning environment has been more important than ever in the midst of a pandemic.

Now I ask you to trust me to continue my work as a student advocate in our umbrella organization SAMOK. I intend to bring charisma, know-how and courage to SAMOK’s board, but above all the innovative and solution-oriented approach of Metropolia’s students. I am going to make sure that in the future, distance learning does not mean that the teacher does the task listing and everything is done independently or that everything covers the teacher’s one-on-one conversation with the Zoom lecture.

I will make sure that every student is paid for internships in the future, especially in the social and health fields. A good model for this could be found in university internships. However, the minimum wage should be the salary according to KELA’s employment conditions, ie approximately 1,236 € / month.

I will also make sure that, as the FSHS expansion progresses, the wishes of all undergraduate students will be heard. For example, I think we need to have an office in Vantaa and FSHS should develop its digital services. Black FSHS could also be in a mobile app. What could be more convenient than reserving time for a psychologist or dentist through the app? We must also make sure that better health services benefit all university students, including Finland’’, Samatar describes her views.

Support at the Student Parliament

At the meeting of the Representative Council, two speeches of support were given to Nimo Samatari. He gathered support, questions and confidence at the House of Representatives meeting briskly.

‘’ There are many things that unite me with Nimo: courage, when needed bitterness, sense of humor and the thought of others by tricking and sincere support, you can go a long way.

In addition to character traits, we are united by a good sense of justice, believe in it that education is a human right, a desire to make the world a better place for everyone and an understanding that the world is not getting better but it also requires throwing work ahead of goals’’, Hanna Kivimäki, a student of cultural production – who works as a student representative on Metropolia’s board and in active in Demarinuoret the Youth of the Social Democracy Party, described the meeting at the Representative Council meeting.

‘’ I know Nimo both as chairperson of METKA’s board last year and as a friend. I can proudly say that I am nominating Nimo Samataria to METKA’s Board of Directors of SAMOK.

Studies in the social field give Nimo a comprehensive understanding of the effects of society on the student’s social life and its effects on studies, which is also strongly related to the aspect of livelihood. As a board member, Nimo is an imaginative and inspiring person whose energetic grip I would long for on these dark dark evenings ”, describes Linda Lindgren, a social studies student who has known at Nimo Metropolia since her inception. Linda is now a Chairperson of Talentia social science students TASO Ry

METKA’s candidate, Nimo Samatar, dedicates her party book to the Left Alliance and active political friends and passionately supports the activities of left-wing students. He described at the meeting of the House of Representatives that he was Li Andersson’s biggest fan and dreamed of working as a special assistant to the Minister of Education. In addition, Nimo was spotted at the meeting of the Representative Council speaking Finnish, Swedish and English fluently.

”I warmly recommend Nimo to the board of SAMOK. Nimo is an ambitious, experienced and deserving student activist who knows how to identify and address social ills and give everyone a more equal, solidary and feminist tomorrow”, comments Anna Lemström the Chairperson of Vasemmisto-opiskelijat – The Left Alliance Students.

Metropolia Principal recommends

METKA’s candidate Nimo also received valuable and beautiful words from Metropolia’s Principal Riitta Konkola, who warmly and proudly recommends her to the Board of SAMOK – the Union of Students in University of Applied Sciences for the year of 2021.

“Nimo Samatar has worked closely with Metropolia’s senior management by regularly attending meetings of the Principal and the Board of Directors of METKA and the Executive Director approximately once a month during the semesters. Nimo is active, inspiring and has excellent interaction skills.

She boldly and weighed up new ideas to promote the well-being of students in the university community and finds the effectiveness of polytechnics important. During the past year, METKA, its Leaders and Executive Director have vigorously advanced the reform of student union operations, actively involving Metropolia’s students.

Nimo is clearly interested in other social phenomena in addition to higher education”, Riitta Konkola describes her year of cooperation with Nimo.
