METKA’s Vice Chairperson of the Board, Nimo Samatar, is currently at Seta’s Assembly. The meeting will be held on 14-15 November 2020 as a remote meeting. The Assembly deals with statutory matters, the most important of which are:
- Seta’s strategy
- action plan and budget
- election of the Board: chairperson, second vice-chairperson, two full members and one deputy member
- members of the Seta council.
METKA has addressed the Seta Assembly on 14 November 2020. You can read Nimo’s speech on behalf of Metropolia students below:
Dear friends and dear Seta Assembly,
My name is Nimo Samatar, and I have the pleasure and great honor of being here on behalf of METKA, the student body of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. Greetings from Eastern Helsinki!
I promised Metropolia students to bring a greeting to the Seta Assembly. We wrote this in collaboration with Metropolia’s student associations, especially MysteRy, an association for social and health students in Myllypuro, and Demoni Ry, the students in Metropolia’s cultural fields.
In my greeting, I will be talking about why is METKA a supporting member of Seta, even though our umbrella organization, the Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences SAMOK, is already a supporting member? Double support from METKA – why?
Because we, the students of Metropolia, want to support you twice in Finnish society.
METKA’s strategy is named after our values for the next four years: equality, justice and effectiveness. This year, we in the student union have updated the equality statute and made many proposals for the new equality plan of our university as Metropolia students.
Myllypuro social and health care students MysteRy sends thanks for the great collaboration this year, which has raised a lot of separate feedback on how the content of your education should be compulsory for everyone and how instructive it was, for example for child protection studies. Based on Seta’s training, the content of the curricula in Metropolia has already been reconsidered.
Metropolia’s students hope for a smooth and impressive cooperation in the future. Throughout its history, Seta’s activities have been inspiring and revolutionizing the world. Next year will be a jubilee year, as the criminalization of homosexual acts was removed from the Penal Code in 1971. So congratulations to all of us on the coming jubilee year!
We therefore hope that Seta and Seta’s national affiliates will be involved when considering equality from the perspective of students and staff in future universities.
I quote a Metropolia social science student at this point: Nimo I trust you in advancing this cause – although progress has been made, we are not equal and will not be.
Unless we actively promote the opportunities and rights of all to equality. We need diversity for students, but also definitely for staff. This applies not only to sexual and gender diversity – but all of us.
We must set an example. We need to be better than we are right now.
As METKA, the student union of Finland’s largest University of Applied Sciences, we are twice a member of Seta’s support member as Metropolia’s students, because we know that defending human rights needs bold pioneering and example, as well as training for Seta’s operations. One more wish, if I may make it, could you send us a lot of rainbow stuff for METKA so that we can spread even more colorful things in Metropolia together?
Thank you very much for your cooperation. May our future be equally reformative – correcting the debate and injustices of society! I am not entitled to vote here today because I am just enthusiastically in favor, but I wish responsible decisions to the friends dear Seta representatives at this meeting!
If you are ever come by on Metropolia’s campuses, then please know that you are very welcome on our behalf.
Thank you! Kiitos!
The greeting of the Metropolia students went well and Nimo’s cat, Luna, got a glimpse of the representatives at the meeting during the speech. After the speech, Seta promised to send METKA a lot of rainbow stuff. You can open a discussion about meeting documents, personnel selections and other things related to the meeting at the Seta Assembly 2020 Facebook event.
